Purpose-Led Hospitality: Our 2023-24 Sustainability Report

At Lamington Group, we believe our industry has an urgent responsibility to respond to climate change.

Our 2023-24 Sustainability Report offers a window into that journey – showcasing the steps we’ve taken, the impact we’ve made and the vision that continues to guide us.

Our Approach

Grounded in the One Planet Living framework and delivered through our Net Zero Carbon Roadmap, we voluntarily report on our sustainability initiatives and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions because we believe transparency drives accountability – and accountability drives change.

Our sustainability strategy has three core focus areas:

  1. Net Zero: We’re addressing emissions across the full lifecycle of our buildings, from design and construction to daily operations.
  2. Circularity: We see waste as an opportunity to innovate – from turning shampoo bottles into tabletops to the procurement of lights made from orange peels.
  3. Health and wellbeing: We aim to create an inclusive environment where guests feel rested and inspired and employees can grow and thrive.

This approach came to life in our flagship opening of 2023, room2 Belfast. Designed with carbon neutrality, the circular economy and local identity in mind, the hometel features rooftop solar panels, carpets made from recycled fishing nets, bespoke wallpaper by local artists, and a zero waste-to-landfill policy. It’s a bold example of sustainability by design – delivered without compromise of the guest experience.

A Certified Commitment

In November 2023, we became a certified B Corporation, joining a global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance. Our room2 brand is now one of just seven UK hotels with B Corp status.

The certification recognises our performance across five key areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers. Thanks to the collective efforts of our team, we achieved a score of 93.5 – well above the 80-point threshold and the median score of 50.9 for traditional businesses. This is an important milestone that reinforces our commitment to people and the planet, while also setting a clear benchmark for continued progress.

The Lamington Group team celebrates receiving B Corp certification in November 2023.

Measuring Our Progress

We’re proud of the purpose and principles that guide our work and we’re equally proud of the measurable outcomes they deliver. In 2023-24 we:

  • Provided award winning carbon neutral stays across four room2 locations, emitting an average of 61% less carbon per night compared to an average hotel;
  • Ran all properties on 100% renewable electricity;
  • Reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 18% from our 2019 baseline, even as we significantly expanded our portfolio.
  • Operated with zero waste to landfill;
  • And 76% participation in Team Planet, our employee sustainability initiative.

Our 2023-24 Sustainability Report reflects a year of progress, but we know there’s always more to do. In the years ahead, we remain focused on net zero, circularity and creating spaces that benefit people and the planet.
