Lamington Group calls for every day to be Earth Day with the release of its latest ESG report

Hospitality innovators lead the way in voluntarily sharing ESG results and encouraging the industry to take more responsibility in reporting on sustainability efforts

April 2024…// This month, family-owned real estate investor and developer, Lamington Group, released its latest ESG Report, providing an in-depth analysis of the company’s commitment to sustainable development. The B Corp accredited organisation, which is also known as being the founders of the award-winning eco hometel brand, room2, has voluntarily compiled and shared these results to help lead the way in encouraging the wider hospitality industry to work towards Net Zero status.

The report outlines Lamington Group’s progress in meeting its environmental, social and governance targets, as defined in its Net Zero Roadmap and One Planet Living Action Plan. By utilising the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) framework, the report offers stakeholders a transparent and reliable overview of Lamington Group’s sustainability performance, highlighting achievements, challenges, and future goals.

By voluntarily releasing these results, Lamington Group is acting on its own initiative as a family-owned SME company to show accountability for its ESG impacts and to inspire other hospitality businesses to do the same. This transparent approach in reporting on past ESG performance not only shows successes, but also those areas where the group is taking responsibility for ongoing improvements that are necessary to maintain its trajectory to reach Net Zero status by 2030.

The report covers Lamington Group’s achievements across its core pillars of People, Planet and Places throughout the 2021-22 period – noting the time and efforts required to calculate, analyse and measure these results – whilst assessing progress against targets set in the Net Zero Roadmap and One Planet Living Action Plan. Key topics covered include:

  • People – reviewing the group’s innovative approach to employee diversity, health and wellbeing, and training and development
  • Planet – demonstrating results in reducing carbon footprint, increasing energy efficiency and promoting sustainable sourcing and procurement
  • Places – accounting for community initiatives as well as sustainable design principles that celebrate local talent, whilst proving how the company uses its platform to educate and engage stakeholders in all aspects of sustainability, both on and off site

Significant accreditations during this period included Lamington Group achieving Net Zero verification for room2 Chiswick, which opened in December 2021. It was recently accredited as a Net Zero operation meeting ISO 14064-1:2018 standards. In addition, in 2022, the company reduced its overall CO2 emissions and offset the differences between its reported and target CO2 emissions to achieve the BSI PAS 2060 carbon neutrality accreditation for the full room2 brand.

Lamington Group has also taken this opportunity to look ahead and outline its ambitious strategy and goals for the next reporting period, which it is currently working towards. This includes the target to achieve 5000 keys by 2030, whilst working in line with its Net Zero delivery plan. The group is continuously seeking out opportunities across the UK to deliver more eco-conscious hotels that will add social value for the local community. On a wider scale, the group strives to encourage greater industry action and for the hospitality sector to re-imagine growth within the safe operating space of our planet’s ecological limits. Lamington Group calls on stakeholders, industry leaders and the public to come together to make a change that will echo through future generations.

Robert Godwin, CEO and Stuart Godwin, Managing Director of Lamington Group commented “We are compelled to shine a light on our industry and call for action to decarbonise rapidly. With buildings accounting for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, the real estate sector – and the hospitality industry in particular – can no longer shirk its responsibility. Our hope is that our commitment to sustainability and our journey to Net Zero acts as a catalyst for the global hotel sector, showing the industry what can be achieved in tackling the defining challenge of our time.”

By releasing this report, Lamington Group hopes to inspire others, and demonstrate how it is continuously challenging itself to achieve better outcomes for People, Places and the Planet through its One Planet Living, Health & Wellbeing, Circularity and Net Zero goals at all its properties, whilst consistently keeping its sights on even greater achievements in the future.
